Wilyabrup, Margaret River

Our Philosophy

From the Heart of the Land

Cullen wine comes from the heart of the land rather than the mind of the winemaker. Quality is not something we add at the end of the process. It begins in the soil, in the health of the vine, and in the decision to work with nature rather than try to control it. Every step, from vineyard to bottle, is guided by this principle.

Honouring Country

Connection to Land

Cullen Wines is located on the ancient soils of Wilyabrup, meaning "place of red ochre," widely regarded as the heart of the Margaret River wine region. The land has been cared for by the Wadandi people for more than 65,000 years.

We respectfully acknowledge the Wadandi people as the Traditional Custodians of Wilyabrup Country and strive to care for the environment, its flora and fauna, with respect and responsibility. Our work follows the rhythm of the Wadandi Six Seasons Calendar, a traditional calendar reflecting the natural cycles observed by the Noongar people for thousands of years.

The Wannang Trees

A Living Connection

The Wannang (peppermint) trees that grow across the Cullen estate predate European settlement and remain an important presence throughout the vineyard, particularly around the Biodynamic Wine Room.

Traditionally regarded as women's trees, Wannang trees were used by the Wadandi people for shelter building, smoking and cleansing practices. In 2021, when a cherished Wannang tree was lost, we created a storytelling and wine tasting table in its place, where guests can connect with the land and its history.

The Vineyards

Cullen & Mangan

The Cullen Vineyard was planted across 1971, 1976, and 1988. It grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Chenin Blanc. The Mangan Vineyard followed in 1995 and 1997, growing Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chenin Blanc.

Both vineyards are dry-farmed and certified organic and biodynamic by Australian Certified Organic. The uniqueness of Cullen wines comes in part from the vineyard itself. The role of the winemaker is to act as caretaker to the fruit, to understand and realise the full potential of the land.

In the Winery

Creating Wines From Nature

The process of making wine at Cullen involves handling the fruit as little and as gently as possible. Hand harvesting, minimal fruit transport, sorting before crushing, minimal wine movement, and minimal filtration ensure that the wine in the bottle is a true expression of the fruit it is made from.

The wines are mostly making themselves. Indigenous yeast, no additions of any kind, minimal oak use. Harvesting follows Maria Thun's biodynamic calendar, using the moon's position in fire constellations for greater intensity and preservation of fruit flavour. In both the vineyard and the winery, we are working with nature rather than trying to control it.

Living by the Land

The Wadandi Six Seasons

At Cullen Wines, our philosophy has always been grounded in caring for the land that nurtures our vines, honouring it rather than simply taking from it.

This deep respect for place is why our work follows the rhythm of the Wadandi Six Seasons Calendar, a traditional calendar that reflects the natural cycles observed for thousands of years by the Noongar people.
