2024 Elvie Clarke SBS

2024 Elvie Clarke SBS

This wine naming honours Elvie Clarke, mother of Kevin John and daughter of Ephraim
and Louisa Clarke. Elvie Alice Clarke was a gifted pianist and enchanting story teller.
Elvie’s musical career was cut short by the first World War.

The wine is a blend of 58% sauvignon blanc, 35% Semillon and 7 % Verdelho. The vines
were planted in 1995-1997 and are certified biodynamic since 2008 and owned by Cullen
Wines since 2016. The fruit was hand harvested around the biodynamic calendar of fruit
and flower days, the wine was naturally fermented without additions of acid malolactic
culture and fermentation yeast allowing the lands voice to sing loudly in the glass.

2024 vintage was the hottest, driest and earliest harvest on record. Rainfall turned off like a tap at the end of September 2023, with nominally no rain until the season broke in May 2024. Unseasonable warmth all through the growing season combined with heatwaves in January meant harvest started early and was over extremely quickly.

But with sunshine comes flavour and 2024 does not disappoint in fruit weight and concentration. No rain and plenty of sun means wines hit their optimal
ripeness (albeit earlier than expected!) and created wines with great depth of flavour and extract.

The ample marri blossom and dry conditions meant both bird and disease pressure was low, the main thing keeping us awake at night was the water stress on our dry grown vines. Both whites and reds show opulence and power that so far show great promise for the future.

  • Colour Light green, pale straw with creamy
    tinges
  • Cellar Enjoy now or for up to 15 years
  • Bouquet Elderflower, white flower, jasmine, gardenia, lemons, grapefruit, passionfruit
  • Food Mushroom risotto, kingfish ceviche.
  • Palate Vibrant and clean citrus lively acidity
with a predominant zesty scent of kaffir
    lime kumquat and pink grapefruits
showing layers of complexity out of the
phenolic tensions that lingers with a
clean unctuous juicy fruit and texture
    of pear and pink apple.
