2024 Kevin John Legacy Series Flower Day

2024 Kevin John Legacy Series Flower Day

The story of the Kevin John Legacy Chardonnays was born from biodynamics and the observation that extraordinary and distinctive wines emerge in harmony with the biodynamic calendar a reflection of the planets influences on the vine and the wine.

The 2024 Legacy Series Flower Day Kevin John Chardonnay is an artisanal expression, hand-harvested from Block 3 on 15th January, a Flower Day. Whole bunches were basket-pressed to tank on the day of harvest, then settled for one day before being transferred to a concrete egg for natural fermentation over six days. The wine was then racked to a new oak puncheon for six months of maturation before bottling, with no fining or filtration, a pure reflection of our Terroir.

VINEYARD
100% Cullen Vineyard
VARIETIES
100% Chardonnay
HARVEST
15th January Flower Day
OAK
6 months in biodynamic 100% new oak puncheon
ALCOHOL
13.5%

2024 vintage was the hottest, driest and earliestharvest on record. Rainfall turned off like a tap at the end of September 2023, with nominally no rain until the season broke in May 2024. Unseasonable warmth all through the growing season combined with heatwaves in January meant harvest started early and was over extremely quickly.

But with sunshine comes flavour and 2024 does not disappoint in fruit weight and concentration. No rain and plenty of sun means wines hit their optimal ripeness (albeit earlier than expected!) and created wines with great depth of flavour and extract.

The ample marri blossom and dry conditions meant both bird and disease pressure was low, the main thing keeping us awake at night was the water stress on our dry grown vines. Both whites and reds show opulence and power that so far show great promise for the future.

In spite of these adverse conditions, in Wilyabrup, we finished harvest in good time and are very happy with the wines. Standout varieties: chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon.

  • Colour: Light gold with green tinges
  • Cellar: Enjoy now or for up to 20 years
  • Bouquet: A refined and layered nose of white peach,
lemon curt and Bosc pear, lifted by delicate florals of honeysuckle and verbena. Subtle notes of roasted chestnut & honeycomb unfold with hints of brioche and vanilla, revealing remarkable depth, purity and minerality. A reflection of its Flower Day vitality
  • Food: Pan seared marron, roast chicken with preserved lemon, or fine aged Comté
  • Palate: Beautifully structured and balanced, it carries
bright and fresh framed by citrus notes of kumquats, pears and a mediterranean touch of persimmons & figs. Ripe stone fruit and white peach follow, leading
into a perfumed floral core of chamomile giving an incredible texture and length. Poised, powerful and deeply expressive.

"Pure magic. Complex and expressive aromas of preserved lemons, struck match, honeysuckle and beeswax with salted nuts, flint, orange blossoms and pastry. Long, compact palate with a mineral drive. Electric acidity, phenolic tension and structure bring this wine into perfect harmony. Whole-bunch carbonic maceration in beeswax-lined amphorae. Chardonnay perfection. Drink or hold. Screw cap. 600 bottles produced."
