Vintage 2023 was a low yielding vintage which resulted in some stunning grapes and hence quality wine. In particular Cabernet Sauvignon exhibited the best typicity of varietal manifestation. The 52 year old vines consistently yield well year on year out.
The growing conditions until December were cold and wet and due to the negative Indian dipole and La Niña effects finishing in December 2022 we had an unprecedented dry spell from December until the end of harvest. Delayed budburst. Cold southerly breezes blowing off the ocean and cool mornings, evenings, and nights helped retain natural acid in the fruit. At the same time, short periods of peak heat during the day were ideal for slow, even ripening across all grape varieties.
Small berry size particularly in white grape varieties produced beautifully balanced wines; Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Cabernet and Malbec all outstanding.
Truly magical. Decadent yet restrained with deeply complex black-fruit aromas, a floral lift and a real sense of earth. Roses, violets, dark cherries and crushed blackberries with undertones of cedar and minerals.
The seamless palate is polished and round, substantial yet aloof, with perfectly integrated tannins and a fresh finish. It’s hard to even begin describing this wine—it is so complete, bright and refined. Drink or hold. Just 526 bottles. Screw cap.
99 Points, James Suckling.
Colossal depth of saturated purple colour; fresh and youthful aromas of violets, blackberry and mulberry, and also shows the vanilla and chocolate of the 2023 Diana Madeline, with which it has much in common (only more!). An epic wine, with astounding concentration and persistence. This is a great cabernet that looks set for 50 years. Cellar!
