2009 Diana Madeline 6L Imperial

2009 Diana Madeline 6L Imperial

Vanya has referred to 2009 as the Mozart vintage because all of the wines produced in that year are in perfect harmony and balance. The quality, purity and vibrancy of the fruit produced in 2009 are exquisitely expressed in the Diana Madeline of this year. This most recent of Cullen flagship red wines contains a particularly large contribution of Cabernet Sauvignon (88%), reflecting the remarkable quality of the fruit provided by this variety and which came from vines that were among the very first plantings at Cullen Wines in 1971. The remainder of the wine comprised 6% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot and 2% Malbec.
The fruit was picked at Baumés ranging from 12 to 13.7˚ and the wine was naturally fermented and matured for 13 months in French oak, of which 55% was new.

The 2009 vintage at Cullen Wines was so outstanding that Vanya has referred to it as the Mozart vintage because all of the white and red wines produced in this year are in perfect harmony and balance. Good rainfall in the Spring of 2008 resulted in excellent development of the vines and the provision of underground moisture for the lead-up to vintage. A small amount of rainfall in January 2009 was followed by little or no rainfall and no unduly hot weather in the following two months, during which the vast majority of fruit was harvested. A dream vintage for a wine maker!

  • Colour Deep red with strong purple tinges on the meniscus.
  • Cellar Drink now and up to 15 years
  • Bouquet Very attractive blend of ironstone perfumed violet and red currant aromas.
  • Palate Fresh red currant flavours with a touch of plum are in perfect balance with the firm but unobtrusive tannins. Great length and persistent. A supremely elegant and yet very substantial wine. Iron fist in the velvet glove!
