2014 Kevin John Legacy Series – Flower Day MOSH

The conditions for 2014 were near perfect, the fruit produced by all varieties in the vineyards of Cullen Wines in 2014 was exceptional. We had no rain in January, February and until the end of harvest in March. These low yields, fantastic pH and great acids levels translated in wines of great flavour and style.

We have observed that Moon Opposite Saturn Harvest (MOSH) gives us wines which are vibrant, mineral and full of life, so we harvested separately on this day, which was a flower day harvest and whole bunch pressed to barrel where the wines went through natural fermentation.

The 2014 Flower Barrel Moon-Opposite-Saturn Harvested Chardonnay has a closed nose, with hints of apples, citrus, yeast and toast, as well as chalk dust. Light to medium-bodied, the wine is both crisp and taut, while still being creamy, long and minerally. The wine needs more time to come around.

In case you were wondering, when the moon was opposite Saturn, it was a flower day, back in February 2014. 82 dozen produced. Had a little fining, and a little filtering. Picked 3 or 4 days earlier than the other 2014 ‘Legacy Series’ Chardonnay wines.

Tight racy style featuring strong lemon accented flavour, but softened with some honeycomb characters, spicy oak, subtle peppermint perfume and raw almond. It’s light to medium bodied, tangy and tense, crackling with energy, and flinty and long to close. Very stylish. Needs a couple of years to settle and flesh out.
