2023 Mangan Vineyard Red Moon
The Mangan vineyard was planted in 1995-1997 and is now biodynamically certified expressing purity of site in each and every wine. This wine is called Red Moon and the Red Moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse, when light filtering through the earth’s atmosphere dapples the moon in red light. A total lunar eclipse occurred on the 16th May 2022 just after the end of another harvest here at Cullen’s.
This hand harvested fruit was destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts with no additions or fining at bottling. It was fermented in older oak for 8 months to preserve fruit weight and intensity. A blend of the unique 32% Petit Verdot, 57% Malbec and 11% Merlot this wine is all about the fruit and purity of expression. It is eminently drinkable as a young wine but also will age well under screw cap closure for at least 20 years. 2023 vintage red wines expressed incredible colour and density of flavour and this is no exception.
Vintage Notes
Vintage 2023 was a low yielding vintage which resulted in some stunning grapes and hence quality wine. In particular Cabernet Sauvignon exhibited the best typicity of varietal manifestation. The 52 year old vines consistently yield well year on year out.
The growing conditions until December were cold and wet and due to the negative Indian dipole and La Niña effects finishing in December 2022 we had an unprecedented dry spell from December until the end of harvest.
Small berry size particularly in white grape varieties produced beautifully balanced wines; Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Cabernet and Malbec all outstanding.
