2022 harvest was the warmer vintage we were looking for after the cooler 2021. The wetter cooler growing season was followed by a warm dry harvesting time. Perfect for old vine 51 year old cabernet sauvignon at Cullen’s. Being dry farmed and then being given the moisture needed for perfect ripening .Yields were low and berries small giving beautifully balanced fruit and tannin makeup with stunning aromatics. The cabernet sauvignon vines grown on the Scott Henry trellising allowing sunlight to access the fruit from berry set onwards pushed phenolic and
physiological ripeness. Flavour, tannin, acid, ph, all coming together at the same time.
This 100% cabernet sauvignon was harvested in late march on a fruit day, with, Venus, Mars and Saturn in conjunction.
It was crushed to 300 litre beeswax (our very own from Cullen vineyard) amphora and fermented with 46 days on skins before pressing into a new flower day puncheon. The wine was aged in oak for 7 months before bottling on fruit day.
Vintage Notes
2022 vintage grew wines of immense perfume and texture. The cooler season and low yields ensured that the health of the vines and hence the fruit quality. Exceptionally good for chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and of course Cabernet Sauvignon.

A wine that brings the biodynamic vineyard and winemaking commitment at Cullen into a remarkable expression of pure Margaret River cabernet sauvignon. These vines are now more than 50 years old and are contributing to wines that are bright and high fidelity. After fermentation in 300l terracotta amphorae the wine gets a further 7 months new oak maturation. Bright aromas of chocolate and blackcurrant with a leafy minerally oyster shell overlay. The palate strikes a seamless intricate balance with fine minerally tannins treading through a complex weave of tobacco leaf and ironstone with a subtle bay leaf addition over the dark fruits. It’s up there with any previous releases.
